Bio-Innovation Challenge 2019

Bio-Innovation Challenge 2019

Understanding Disease Biology & Public Health Outcomes Through Analysis of Open Data Sources

The collision of life sciences’ traditional biology and pharmacology with technology and big data has enormous potential. Innovation & growth require interdisciplinary collaboration to evolve & create capabilities. As computing power, data volume, and demand for health innovation grows, so too does the need to leverage data to support innovation.

There are discoveries hidden in data that can change the world. BioCrossroads seeks to foster artificial intelligence and machine learning as key tools to realize those discoveries that fuel innovation.

HOW IT WORKS

The BioCrossroads DataX Challenge is an opportunity for innovators to demonstrate how diverse, independent, publicly available data sets can be used as a springboard. The BioCrossroads DataX Challenge seeks creative innovators to identify and explore critical issues in diabetes health and opioid addiction.

TEAM STRUCTURE

Teams may be within a corporate group, academic institution, independent or any combination thereof. Diverse teams that exemplify expertise in biology/pharmacology, data sciences/data wrangling, clinical, and public health outcomes/real world evidence recommended.

PHASE 1

Launch Challenge

PHASE 2

First Round of Judging

PHASE 3

In-Person Pitch

Proposals Must Include:

  • Focus on diabetes care or opioid addiction
  • Describe an experiment that would test the hypothesis
  • Hypotheses & proposed solutions must be data driven
  • Improvements must impact disease identification, management, diagnosis, and/or treatment
  • Impact can be at the patient, provider, and/or health care systems network level by making data used and useful

Data Sets

Leveraging and bridging publicly available data sets is at the heart of the Challenge. By using publicly available data sets to identify and investigate a hypothesis, the Challenge seeks to foster new solutions and innovation. Teams may employ other data sets instead of or in addition to those provided. Teams must be able to disclose and share content of data sources.
